A decision to save a life

On an evening in December, full of despair, Kristen* reflected on her life and her marriage. She was still so young and the memories filling her mind were those of disappointment, without hope, and anything but what she had dreamt her life would one day be. She began to imagine and consider what the coming days would bring as she had recently found out some news that was completely unexpected and undesired. She was going to have a baby. She was pregnant.

Kristen had only a guess of how far along she might be. She had begun to have pregnancy symptoms but had not seen a doctor or had an ultrasound. It seemed like her last menstrual period had been about three months before. Yet, if she were honest, she really wasn’t certain.

She found herself repeatedly considering the same question, can I have a baby right now? The baby’s father could be considered abusive, and her marriage was anything but bliss. So many pressures and life stressors to consider and face. It all seemed so heavy and almost more than she could bear.

Kristen began to look on the internet for options available for someone facing an unexpected pregnancy. She found a site that allowed her to order chemical abortion pills without any medical oversight or previous ultrasound. She did not need insurance, and the site shared she could even take the pills in the privacy of her own home.

These pills would allow her to leave the despair and disappointment behind, she thought, this could be an answer to the heaviness she had been carrying.

Kristen thought more about her life and her failing marriage, this was not the choice she wanted to make. But she felt it was the only choice she could make.

She ordered the chemical abortion pills.

The pills came in the mail. Kristen was to take one pill first and another set 24-48 hours later. She tried not to think too much about it and took the first pill, mifepristone.

After she swallowed the pill, she continued to think about her life and how she never really wanted to have this abortion. The emotions began to shift from hope of being relieved from despair to sadness and regret. Kristen began to wonder if this really had been the best choice.

What if she could choose life for the baby and find help to get out of the abuse she was facing each and every day?

Kristen’s regret only continued to grow.

She wanted another chance. Another chance to choose life for this child. Kristen began to frantically search on her phone. Was there anyone that could help undo a decision like this? Was that even a thing?

She found the Abortion Pill Reversal hotline and quickly called the number to see if anyone could help. An Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) nurse introduced herself and said that she was available to explain APR and answer any questions Kristen might have. The nurse shared that reversal is a choice available to Kristen and she does not have to continue the abortion if she does not want to.

What a relief. Someone was there to offer her support. Someone was there to listen to all that she had been facing and enduring. She could share everything confidentially and not be judged for the decision she had made and increasingly regretted with each passing minute.

Kristen shared with the nurse that she had taken mifepristone and that it had been less than 24 hours ago.

The nurse answered all her questions and offered her compassion and support. Kristen answered some medical questions and signed the consent form the APR nurse sent to her email. Within an hour, the nurse contacted her to let her know there was a physician in her area who had agreed to help her begin reversal treatment.

Dr. William Lile with the Abortion Pill Rescue® Network (APRN) provided Kristen with an ultrasound and prescribed progesterone in hopes of outcompeting and reversing the effects of the mifepristone. The ultrasound revealed a baby in her uterus with a fetal heart rate and measurements revealing that Kristen was in her first trimester.

“A perfect ultrasound, all praise to God!” Dr. Lile said in response to her ultrasound. “Another image of God redeemed in the womb.”

Kristen and her baby had a second chance. Her decision to call the Abortion Pill Reversal hotline was a decision to save her child’s life.

Thousands of lives have been saved as women experiencing regret from their chemical abortion decisions have called the APR hotline and began Abortion Pill Reversal treatment. The Abortion Pill Rescue Network has over 1,000 physicians, pregnancy help medical clinics, pharmacists, and hospital networks ready and available to offer this life-saving treatment.
