The worst lie: That weakened safety standards for chemical abortions does not pose a threat to women

The Biden administration has taken every opportunity to push the use of the abortion pill, not simply ignoring safety standards, but actually lying about the potential threat to women.

A recent article from The Washington Stand detailed “The 5 Worst Lies of the Biden Administration,” number 1 being, “Weakened safety standards for the abortion pill regimen does not pose a threat to women.”

The article recapped how the Biden administration has worked to push chemical abortion even at the risk of women’s safety and with disregard for the facts.

In January of this year the FDA removed the in-person requirement for dispensing abortion drug mifepristone and opened the door to distributing chemical abortion pills via brick-and-mortar pharmacies.

The article then covered how mifepristone – the first of two drugs in the two-drugs chemical abortion regimen - had previously been placed under the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation System (REMS) “due to reports of adverse events up to and including death,” and that “REMS is reserved “for certain medications with serious safety concerns.”

However, in removing the in-person dispensing requirement, the FDA, “enabled abortion pill dispensaries to ship the pills to women without any oversight from a health care practitioner,” it said. The FDA later had “determined that the data support modification of the REMS to reduce burden on patient access and the health care delivery system and to ensure the benefits of the product outweigh the risks.”

On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade this year Biden released a memo backing this action by the FDA, saying it was “evidence-based” and taken “after an independent and comprehensive review of the risks and benefits.”

Biden then directed the Departments of Justice Health and Human Services to work together to foster expansion of the abortion pill regimen’s distribution. Subsequent to the directive, predictably Attorney General Merrick Garland and HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra both criticized an April court decision blocking the distribution of mifepristone, which is currently on hold.

The Washington Stand then went to the Charlotte Lozier Institute’s (CLI) for research on chemical abortion effects, citing CLI’s peer-reviewed, 17-year longitudinal study of Medicaid claims data, which found that “chemical abortion has led to a surge in emergency room visits and higher rates of complications.” The outlet followed with further data from Finland, Sweden, and California finding higher complication rates with chemical abortion.

Even though Biden had called the FDA review “comprehensive” and “evidence-based,” the articles noted that the data the FDA reviewed “was far less robust than these peer-reviewed studies.”

It went on to quote Dr. James Studnicki, CLI’s vice president of Data Analytics, who said, “Starting in 2016, the FDA chose to only require reports of death associated with the abortion pill, making their dataset woefully incomplete.”

The Washington Stand then concluded, “The FDA review ignored this substantial evidence of high complication rates when it freed the distribution of chemical abortion pills from professional oversight.”

The Washington Stand, the news site for Family Research Council, is not alone in finding that the FDA, certainly under the Biden administration, is not putting the health and safety of women at the forefront in dealing with the abortion pill.

In the latest development in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the case concerning the FDA’s initial approval of chemical abortion devoid of its own established standards, the actions of the FDA and the Biden administration have been examined by the court and found to be a harmful threat to women.

It’s a fool’s errand at this point to chalk this up to incompetence in not seeing the danger posed by abortion pills. No, one must recognize the blatant lying in order to serve the financial interest of those who benefit from the distribution of chemical abortion.

Thus, it is appropriate for the weakening of safety standards for chemical abortion drugs to claim the top of the Biden administration worst lies list.
